Open wide the doors to Christ

A six-session Lenten program welcoming the person of Jesus in our lives and communities.

From Bishop Peter Ingham

My dear Brothers and Sisters,
“Throw open the doors to Christ” were the words pronounced by John Paul II on 22 October 1978, the day of his inauguration as Pope. Pope Benedict has renewed this call, saying: “If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide... Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ - and you will find true life.”

This year, our Diocese celebrates a Year of Welcome. I invite clergy, religious and laity to open wide the doors of our hearts, our homes and our communities to Christ and each other. What better time to renew our welcome to Jesus Christ and Christ’s faithful than in the season of Lent! As we are signed with the ashes at the start of Lent, we are invited to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” – a call for you and me to take up the Lord’s invitation to be a “human being fully alive” (St Irenaeus) “so that it is no longer I (only) who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.” (Gal 2:20)

Then, as Jesus’ faithful disciples, we become grateful stewards of all the blessings we have received as we share our time, talent and treasure responsibly and generously. Through reflecting upon, and praying with, this Lenten resource, my hope is that we may turn away from whatever fears or failings prevent us from opening our door. May the Spirit of boldness give us the courage to throw open the doors of our hearts to the One who has come that we may “have life, life in all its fullness.” (Jn 10:10)

I invite you to join me in our Lenten exercises that, through the welcome, the inclusion and the hospitality we continue to offer, we may prepare the way for others and for ourselves to experience a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yours in the Lord
